hit the road title
hit the road image Networking is a key marketing strategy that deserves a game plan. Make an effort to regularly expand your contacts by seeking opportunities to showcase your business and increase your visibility. Target a specific number of new contacts each week. Get out of your office. Set up lunch meetings with perspective clients and potential partners in complementary businesses. Mix and mingle at conferences. Volunteer for industry-related committees and offer yourself up as an expert on panel presentations.
who you know title
hit the road image Virtually everyone you come in contact with can be a resource for sales leads, business know-how or referrals.Throw a wide net. Connect with neighbors and alumni organizations and reconnect with ex-bosses and former colleagues. And make sure your networking efforts extend to social media outlets like LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and the newly launched "I Hate Filing Club" Community Forums!

Having an online networking presence is fast becoming an essential tool for every small business.
Polish your Pitch
Always be prepared to promote your business with a prepared pitch. Keep it short—thirty seconds or so—punchy and to the point. Introduce who you are, and what you do as specifically as possible and why you’re the go-to-person in your field. End with a call to action: “If you’re in the market for quality widgets at value prices, give me a call and we can discuss your widget needs at length.” Always have your business card ready to pass out, and make sure you ask for theirs, too.

For the pro on the go, the Oxford Executive Document Holder makes organizing all of the business cards, documents and notes you collect on your networking calls a snap!

the follow up
the follow up image The goodbye handshake after a lunch meeting or industry event is just the beginning of a solid networking strategy. While you’re still fresh in their minds, send a follow-up great-to-meet-you e-mail, call and offer to make a referral or ask for input into a business idea. Then look for opportunities to touch base with your new contacts down the road, making sure not to wear out your welcome.
return on investment
Networking isn’t about the quick hit but about building long-term relationships. The best networkers understand they need to strike a balance between their own self-promotional efforts and being a good sounding board and resource for others. Listen as much as you talk and give as good as you get.
