Eye on Sustainability: Greening Your Workspace

Published Thursday, April 14, 2011 5:37 PM

Sustainability might well be the watchword of 2011. Wal-Mart is going organic, the White House is lit with CFL bulbs and even the 2011 Super Bowl was "carbon neutral" thanks to NFL offsets of renewable energy purchases.

The "greening" of America is not limited to our homes and big institutions. Workplaces across the country are jumping on the sustainability bandwagon. Want to get on board? Here are some tips for implementing sustainability practices in the workplace.

Company Owners

Seek out rental agreements in office spaces committed to sustainable and green practices. Work with property managers to put in place company-wide recycling programs and choose to light your spaces with energy efficient bulbs. Opt to not overly ventilate your space; while heat and air conditioning are needed seasonally, temperatures don't need to veer to the extreme.

Office Managers

Curb paper and printing waste by standardizing double-sided printing in the office. Recycle used ink-jet cartridges. Make use of recycling bins throughout the workspace to encourage employees. Optimize natural light for illumination and use motion detectors for lights in rooms not frequently in use. Require cleaning products to be environmentally friendly. Consider creative programs such as office bike racks or carpooling to reduce commuting pollution.

Employees

Adhere to office recycling and energy efficiency programs. Opt for task lighting when working late versus overhead illumination. Turn off your printer, chargers and lamps at the end of the day. Turn your computers off as well as long as your IT teams don't need to conduct maintenance on them at night. Drink tap water or use aluminum water bottles than plastic.  Brown-bagging lunches saves dollars and packaging waste from restaurants.

Sustainability is more than just a fad, it's an increasingly important factor in how we work and live. Commit to not only living greener but working greener.
